Book Beanie Knock Off

I LOVE my e-reader. Not so much love in holding  the darn thing. It's small and thin both  of which are good for portability but the same small and thin makes holding it a problem.

Perhaps I just have holding issues. I have  problems with real books too.   Holding them open can sometimes be a challenge. Some  are bound such that the type ends up literally in the crack of the spine.  You shouldn't  need  brute strength or a crowbar to get to the words in the crack. Am I right?

When I got my Nook a few years ago I looked on Amazon for available options  to hold my ereader for me. At the time the closest thing I found to hands free and rotational  was in the $150. range and out of my range. Plus it was BIG and heavy.

I tried a lot of  You Tube ideas and bent things, wires and hangers and such, but wasn't very satisfied with any of them. Maybe a little OCD with things not being even on both sides played into my dissatisfaction.

I conjured up a  contraption to hold my Nook similar to  a fan you might get at a fair or a ballgame on a hot day. You know the paperboard  thingy with a tongue depressor stapled to the middle of  it? Mine was more wooden ruler  meets a complicated intertwining of  4 black rubber bands with a bulletin board push pin anchoring the whole lot.  But there comes only so many thick, flat, black rubber bands in a bag  and they seem to degrade and pop at a fast rate. I find the  colored ones are too distracting  and  I have zero use for all the extra rubber bands.  I need to conjure up another prototype.

I did see a kinda sorta like version on Amazon last week. The Futur-e-Stick. It has a one hand grip and  has the capacity to recharge your device   but it's $55-ish price doesn't make me want to have it right now. Maybe if I saw one up close and personal I'd change my mind.

While on  Pinterest the other day I saw a homemade version of Book Beanie from Sandra over at Sugar Cubes & Spice Cake.  http://sugarcubesandspicecake.blogspot.com/2011/06/another-knock-off-pillow-for-my-kindle.html Thanks SOOOO much for the post, Sandra!!!

I had seen the Book Beanies on Amazon  many times when looking for ereader holder/gizmos but didn't want to pay the  Book Beanie price. It also wasn't really what I thought I wanted and while I think the eyes are cute I don't think I want eyes looking at me while I read.

I'm a crafter and a sewer and I have tons of fabric. I decided to knock one out immediately. I didn't have any poly pellet filler on hand so I used some 15 bean mix for weight and busted up some packing peanuts into little bits to be the squishy filler. Can you say static mess?  I gotta say I love it. Ok, I love them. I made another a few days later. More to follow for gifts.

I have had fun playing with these looking for the best positioning. My favorite is posted in the picture..... 1) make the "mouth" 2) starting at the front seam squish almost all the filler away from the bottom of the "mouth" into the middle 3) wiggle the Nook into the mouth bottom about an inch from the edge 4)  pull the top of the mouth (fabric) around the top of the Nook....  It looks like Nook is wearing a hoodie. I then stuff the top and loop into the middle and it ends up looking like a small tv set.   I can lay on my back in bed and prop the beanie on my tummy/chest and the Nook won't slide or fall out when I shift a bit.  Did I mention I love it?  I'd probably love the name brand product too but I really love that I made these for zip with on hand items.
